Periodontal Gum Treatments

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth and hold them in place. When one of our patients is experiencing gingivitis (mild gum irritation) or advanced gum disease (also known as periodontitis), we may refer them to a local, trusted periodontist. This is a dental specialist who focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gums and the supporting tissues of your mouth.

What should I expect from a visit to the Periodontist?

Periodontists offer treatments like “deep scaling” and “root planing” which includes the deep cleaning of an infected root surface. A periodontist may also remove damaged tissues or conduct regenerative procedures that could reverse lost bone and tissue damage.

What causes gum disease?

Certain health factors can put patients at higher risk for gum disease such as pregnancy, diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, or having recently had cancer treatment or an organ replacement.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

If you have gums that are swollen or puffy, feel tender when touched, or bleed easily, you could be experiencing gum disease. Other factors include bad breath or a pink-tinged toothbrush after brushing.

If you are experiencing any of the above health factors, give us a call at Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry.
