Dental implants are a great alternative to bridges and dentures. You can think of a dental implant as an artificial tooth root, similar in shape to a screw. An adult who has had a tooth removed due to tooth infection, injury or decay may benefit from a dental implant.
For patients who are candidates for dental implants, we work with local dental surgeons who place the dental implants. Implants can restore the dental structure to its most natural looking condition and functionality.
The dental implant is placed in the jawbone. Over a 4-6 month period, it bonds with your natural bone and becomes a strong foundation for supporting artificial (or false) teeth. The surgeon then uncovers the implant and places a healing cap (which resembles a small eraser) to help the gum tissue to heal for the prosthetic (crown, bridge or denture) phase. Two weeks later, the dentist takes an impression to send to a dental lab to have a custom abutment (or connector) fabricated to attach to the dental implant to support the prosthesis. Lastly, a custom-made prosthesis is placed on top of the abutment to match your natural teeth.
Not only do they look and feel like normal teeth, dental implants are a replacement tooth option that stimulates bone growth and helps to prevent bone loss. Also, they can last for decades when properly cared for.
It’s important to have a replacement tooth evaluated and restored as soon as possible to prevent health issues that can surface. If you have recently lost a tooth, reach out to our team at Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry for an evaluation.
