Do I Really, Really Need to Floss?

At Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry, many patients wonder if flossing actually does anything. We often hear patients ask us: “Is flossing really necessary?”

The truth is, flossing actually does about 40% of the heavy lifting in terms removing sticky bacteria, or plaque, from your teeth. That’s a huge amount! Plaque can cause acid that leads to cavities, gum irritation, and even gum disease. Plus, flossing is the only tool that can get in the tiny spaces between your teeth and remove that sticky substance.

Additionally, did you know that flossing can help you look younger for longer? Gum disease can affect the aesthetics of your smile and even attack the bones that make up the lower part of your face. If you preserve the height of that bone by flossing, it can help your facial structure remain radiant and strong.

So, what are the best ways to floss?

   • Use a piece of floss about 15-18 inches long. When you floss, slide it between the teeth and wrap each tooth in a “C” motion, polishing in an up-and-down motion.

   • A little blood shouldn’t worry you; that just means the gums are inflamed because plaque has built up and needs to be cleaned. However, if you experience repeated bleeding, it could be a sign of periodontal disease.

We know it’s an extra step in your oral hygiene, but flossing is one that shouldn’t be overlooked. And like anything, once it becomes a habit, you’re well on your way to healthier teeth and a more beautiful smile!
