Proper Care for a Dental Bridge

If you have a missing, chipped or cracked tooth, a dental bridge might be a good choice for you. At Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer a variety of restorative dentistry procedures and bridges are a popular option. The dental bridge procedure is essentially a “tooth” bridge that joins an artificial, natural-looking porcelain tooth to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

With proper care, a dental bridge can last 10 years or longer, especially when they are porcelain-fused. However, without proper care, tooth decay can set in and threaten the natural teeth surrounding the bridge. If these natural teeth are weakened, then the bridge can fail.

ASK US ABOUT DENTAL BRIDGES

Caring for your Dental Bridge:

At Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer only the highest-quality custom dental bridges for our patients. Following the procedure in our office, we suggest the following steps to properly care for your bridge:

Brush your teeth twice per day with a fluoride toothpaste.

Floss daily both between your natural teeth and under your new dental bridge.

Use a fluoride wash regularly.

Have your teeth professionally cleaned and the health of your bridge assessed regularly.

Without this proper care, plaque and tooth decay can form underneath the bridge. This can negatively affect the bridge itself, as well as the surrounding teeth and gums.

Dietary Tips

Additionally, following a dental bridge procedure, we suggest that you eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, cheese and fiber. How can this impact the health of your dental bridge? Believe it or not, your nutrition has a direct impact on the health of your teeth.

Dairy products and dark, leafy greens offer calcium which helps promote strong teeth. Nuts and beans (along with eggs, fish, and lean meat) contain phosphorus, which is also good for strengthening your teeth. And finally, fruits and veggies have lots of Vitamin C, which promotes healthy gums.

A healthy body promotes a healthy smile, and in turn, healthy teeth and gums will hold the bridge in place for a longer lifespan.
