With family vacation season upon us, this is a prime photo-taking time every year. Which makes this the perfect time to consider teeth whitening, a very popular cosmetic dentistry procedure and one that Carolina General & Cosmetic Dentistry provides utilizing the best available treatment and technology.
Unless they have already had teeth-whitening treatment, most of our family members, friends and patients at our dental practice in Spartanburg, S.C., tell us they would love to have whiter teeth. Discolored, yellow, or gray teeth can adversely impact your personal and professional interactions. Many people have told us over the years that their discolored teeth have caused self-confidence issues, or made them leery of smiling or being photographed. At Carolina General & Cosmetic Dentistry, we want everyone to feel great about their smile, and teeth whitening is a quick, painless, cost-efficient way to get the smile you’ve always wanted.

What should be considered before choosing teeth whitening?
Our team provides in-office professional teeth whitening using the Zoom! Teeth Whitening procedure. It’s simple, painless, and takes about one hour to complete after I’ve given you an evaluation of your dental and oral health. I will want to discuss your oral hygiene habits to ensure teeth whitening is the right option for you. Smoking and drinking coffee, tea, red wine and cola can all cause teeth discoloration, and poor dental hygiene exacerbates their effects.
It is also important to include teeth whitening as part of a more comprehensive cosmetic dentistry treatment plan. For example, if we create a cosmetic dentistry plan for you that includes veneers, teeth whitening may be needed before that procedure to ensure a better match and final appearance. It is also important to note that existing tooth-colored fillings, crowns and veneers will not respond to the whitening process, so any whitening plan will need to take that into account. I also frequently recommend teeth whitening after people have had braces removed.
How does the Zoom! Teeth Whitening procedure work?
First, I recommend a regular teeth cleaning before the whitening procedure. Zoom is a bleaching process that lightens discoloration of enamel and dentin. Carolina General & Cosmetic Dentistry’s Zoom in-office tooth whitening procedure uses the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp to accelerate the bleaching process by activating the 25 percent whitening hydrogen peroxide solution. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down by the lamp, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin to bleach the stained substances while leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged.
As for the procedure itself, we start by covering your lips and gums and leaving only the teeth exposed. We then will apply the Zoom whitening gel, which will remain on your teeth and work in concert with the Zoom lamp for about 15 minutes. We repeat this two more times, for a total time of 45 minutes.
What kind of results can you expect?
Though results may vary, teeth typically become up to eight shades whiter. A take-home fluoride treatment, along with three nights' worth of at-home bleaching, completes the procedure. In most cases, your teeth will get even whiter the first few days after the procedure.
And if you want or need to brighten your smile by a few additional shades or want to ensure you maintain your in-office results, you can choose the Zoom Whiten On-The-Go Pen. Using a conveniently compact and brush-like pen, you apply the whitening gel to your teeth once in the morning and once in the evening for 10-14 days.
