Whitening your teeth can make a big difference in how you feel about your smile and overall appearance. However, it seems like everywhere you turn these days there’s another approach to whitening! Options like toothpastes, gels, trays, strips and rinses abound both in the marketplace and throughout professional dentist offices. With so many teeth-whitening systems available, we at Carolina General and Cosmetic Dentistry wanted to help clear up the truth about what works and what approaches are safe.

Can toothpaste really whiten teeth?
Over-the-counter toothpastes promise to whiten your teeth within a few uses. While most toothpastes include mild abrasives, whitening toothpastes also include mild polishing ingredients or chemical agents. These can provide some effectiveness; however, when you’re only brushing your teeth for two minutes, this is hardly enough time to activate these products or provide lasting results. Additionally, whitening can toothpastes lighten your teeth by only one shade.
Do over-the-counter teeth-whitening gels, strips and trays work?
You may have also seen over-the-counter whitening gels and strips on the market. Peroxide-based gels are applied with a brush, while whitening strips are invisible strips coated with the gel and applied to the teeth according to the instructions. Results vary but can last up to a few months after a few days of application.
Teeth-whitening trays are also available. Trays can be purchased over the counter or through a dentist-supervised approach, which we’ll share more about below. Over-the-counter trays are often one-size fits all, which lessens effectiveness. They are filled with a gel whitening solution and, depending on the degree of whitening needed, worn for either a few hours or overnight.
